Shangyang Fang is living and working in USA. He writes in both English and Chinese and is now a well-known young poet. In his perspective, although “poetry lies in the wounded openness of the speaker,” writing, eventually, is not about the individual feelings, but how to perceive feelings and transcend from it. Writing is about imagination, whose ultimate form is compassion, whose ultimate form is love. Therefore, both reading and writing are eliminating the barrier of loneliness among one another. Shangyang Fang brings both Chinese cultural perspective and his unique imagination into English poetry. To him, poetry is a way of living.
